Job Seekers advice

Where to begin your search

Finding a new role can be daunting, there are so many ways to search for a new role. Now you have updated your CV you’re ready to go! We are entering into a competitive job market, here are some ways to stand out from the crowd and be the first to apply.

Job Boards

There are lots of different job boards - not all employers will advertise roles on all boards as its quite expensive so it’s worth registering your details with two or three. You can set up job alerts, so as soon as something is advertised you will get an email letting you know. This means you should be one of the first to apply, with high applicant numbers being quick off the mark will help you get seen, especially if it’s an urgent hire.

If you are actively looking, then most job boards will give you the option to have your CV visible to recruiters, this is a great way of people coming to you with roles too.

Indeed has a great function you can set alerts for particular companies that advertise, so if you want to work for a specific company it will alert you as soon as they advertise too.

LinkedIn

Firstly, and most importantly, your LinkedIn and CV have to match, dates and job roles are important. If you have applied for a role then employers who are considering interviewing you should look at your profile, if this information isn’t correct then it will send a red flag from the offset.

Your profile should include:
• Picture – this needs to be clear and professional
• Headline – roles you are looking for
• Recommendations – do you have former bosses, colleagues or customers that will vouch for you? How powerful does this look when hiring managers are looking at your profile?
• Connect, connect connect! Seek out the companies you would like to work for, find the hiring managers, HR or talent teams and send them connection requests
• Introduce yourself once connected even if they aren’t advertising. If you are feeling brave use the voice note function

Google Jobs

Google is a great new tool for job searching since the launch of Google jobs in 2019, just google you job role and location and google will do the rest, Google with scour the internet pages and pull jobs which you can set alerts for.

Step 1: Google Your role

Step 2: Set up your alert

Friends, Family & Social Media

Most companies will advertise internally before going external, and that normally includes employee referrals. We all have that one friend who loves where they work, and maybe you’d like to work there too? Send them to work with your CV. Let your close friends and family know you are looking for a new career, jobs are advertised all over the internet, social media is a great tool while your friends and family are scrolling through timelines and news feeds they can be your eyes too. Just remember to tell them not to tag you unless your boss knows you are leaving.
